This tutorial guide will walk you through the steps to set up a VPN on your QNAP using PPTP.

Note: PPTP provides weak security benefits and should only be used for anonymization or for changing locations.

Find your ExpressVPN account credentials

In order to use ExpressVPN on QNAP, you will need to set up a new VPN profile. To set up a VPN profile, you will need a server address, your account credentials, and the IPsec pre-shared key. This section of the tutorial will show you how to find all of this information.

Open the Welcome Email you received when you signed up for ExpressVPN. Click the link in the email.

Once you’ve clicked the link in the welcome email or logged into the website, click on Set Up on More Devices.

Click on Manual Config on the left side of the screen and then select PPTP & L2TP-IPsec on the right. This will show you your usernamepassword, and a list of server addresses around the world.

Please note this information as you will need it to set up your VPN profile.

Login to your QNAP device

Access your QNAP device and log in using your QNAP credentials. You can log in to your QNAP device here.

Set up a VPN connection

After logging in, open QVPN Service. If you don’t have QVPN Service installed, get it from the App Store.

Open the QVPN Service.

Select VPN Client.

Select "VPN Client."

Click Add and select PPTP.

Click "Add" and then select "PPTP".

Enter the following information (which you obtained previously) in the Create VPN Connection window:

Enter the PPTP connection profile.

Profile Name: Select a profile name of your choice
Server Address: Enter the server address of the location that you wish to connect to
Username: Enter the manual config username
Password: Enter the manual config password
Authentication: MS-CHAPv2
Encryption: High (MPPE 128-bit)

Ensure the box for Use default gateway on remote network is checked. Check the box for Reconnect when the VPN connection is lost if you’d like the VPN to automatically reconnect.

Click Create.

To add another location, repeat the above steps with the new server address.

Connect to the VPN server

To connect to the VPN, click the Connect button on the VPN Client page.

Connect the QNAP VPN.
